@Alex by HD I meant accessible HD. Video on the web before flash or FLV format was horrid. Littered with Quicktime, Windows Media, Real Player loading, player wars etc. Youtube's killer app was using flash for video.

Also about FLV being a file format compared to a codec, that is true I should have clarified. But it's proprietary nature led it to be viewed in the same options as other codecs in many video programs. It wasn't like you could choose the underlying codecs but flv settings which abstracted it. It now has much better support for video standards.

@Ronald yeh flash video took over the web, anytime there is success others will follow and have to copy to beat it. I am just glad video is more accessible and quicker loading nowadays instead of the fat client video players of the past. At least it isn't windows media player. Silverlight is a major improvement over that.

"Still pretty cool a couple years ago there was no HD on the web now everyone has it in H.264 video support."

HD is not exclusive to H.264. There was HD video on the web long before Adobe or anyone else started using H.264. Microsoft used WMV9 (VC-1 prior to SMPTE standardization) to deliver WMV HD online as far back as 2003, and DivX and XviD (both MPEG-4 ASP codecs) HD video has been used on torrent sites for many years.

"Silverlight has H.264 and VC1 support (their own FLV like codec). "

For starters, FLV is not a codec. FLV is a file format. Most old FLV files use H.263 or VP6 codecs, the latter being a proprietary codec owned by On2. VC-1, on the other hand, is not Microsoft's codec anymore but is instead now standardized through SMPTE and licensed by MPEG-LA.

"...they have not allowed this byte code to run on the GPU… yet. Here Flash and Pixel Bender actually are ahead there." However, in this post http://theflashblog.com/?p=822, Lee Brimelow says Pixel Bender filters are not hardware accelerated.
